Food & WIne - Kvareli Wine Cave

The construction of the Kvareli Wine Cave beneath the Caucasus mountain ridge began in 1958. The total budget for the project was 64 million Soviet rubles.

The construction of the Kvareli Wine Cave was completed in 1962, one year ahead of schedule. It was considered one of the most innovative projects in the Soviet Union.

The Kvareli Wine Cave consists of 15 tunnels: 2 main tunnels and 13 connecting ones, with a total length of 7.7 kilometers. According to Soviet-era documents, the cave had the capacity to store up to 20 million liters of wine.

On September 15, 1962, the Kvareli underground wine cellar hosted the World Congress of Vine and Wine. Each delegate was impressed by the architecture and scale of the underground cellar.

Since 2006, the Kvareli Wine Cave has been operated by Winery Khareba, which fully restored the space and transformed it into a vibrant destination.

More than 30,000 bottles of Winery Khareba’s finest wines are currently aging in the Kvareli Wine Cave, with the oldest bottle over 20 years old.

Every day, we welcome hundreds of guests who discover the traditions of Georgian winemaking, taste premium-quality wines, and take part in a qvevri-opening ceremony accompanied by live performances of Georgian folk songs

We create memorable experiences for our guests by immersing them in Georgian traditions. Visitors can participate in culinary masterclasses where they bake bread, make churchkhela, cook khinkali, and prepare Adjarian khachapuri themselves.

At the top of the mountain ridge, above the 15 tunnels, there is a restaurant offering stunning views of the Alazani Valley. Guests can enjoy authentic local dishes paired perfectly with our wines.

In front of the Kvareli Wine Cave lies a vast 20-hectare vineyard belonging to Winery Khareba. From mid-August to the end of October, our guests can take part in the harvest, picking grapes and pressing them in a traditional wooden press—just as our ancestors once did.
